5 hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Greenville, SC you need to try

There are plenty of restaurant chains out there that I like (I’m looking at you, Cheesecake Factory), but many of my most memorable eating experiences have come at mom-and-pop, hole-in-the-wall joints. I’m always on the lookout for these types of places, and I feel obligated to share some of my favorite ones in Greenville, SC with my readers. Without doubt, these are some of the best (and most reasonably priced) restaurants in Greenville.

In no particular order:

  1. Pita House – Cash-only, authentic Middle Eastern. This place delivers a HUGE bang for the buck – absolutely delicious and large quantities for a low price. Make sure you check out their online menu before going there as their in-restaurant menu lacks explanations. I love Middle Eastern food, and this place is about as good as it gets. Location: 495 S Pleasantburg Dr, Greenville, SC  29607
  2. Vic’s Pizza – I’m from NJ, and this makes me, by default, a pizza snob. It seems like every pizza chain these days claims to be “New York-Style,” but only a few deliver on that claim, and Vic’s is one of the few that does. Tip: their lunch special gets you a free drink if you order two slices. Location: 12 E Coffee St, Greenville, SC 29601 (downtown).
  3. Las Meras Tortas – Up until recently I never even knew that there was such a thing as a “Mexican sub.” I learned that the best way possible at Las Meras. Their tortas (subs) are absolutely packed with food. In fact, it’s difficult for me to eat an entire one by myself. And they have other classic Mexican foods (my wife always gets their flautas). Locations: 6119 White Horse Rd, Greenville, SC 29611 and 3058 Wade Hampton Blvd, Taylors, SC 29687.
  4. Mike and Jeff’s BBQ – A Greenville classic but one that surprisingly many don’t know about, due to its location and hole-in-the-wall-ishness. This place is a must for anyone that likes pulled pork, ribs, and good, old-fashioned southern sides. Tip: if you have a group, then do their “buy 3 large pulled pork plates and get one free” deal – you’ll get enough food to feed most large families for under $30! Location: 2401 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, SC  29609.
  5. Golden Llama – Probably the priciest on the list but excellent value, this restaurant delivers absolutely delicious, authentic Peruvian food. The menu is quite diverse, and if you’re a little concerned that you may not go for Peruvian, grab their lomo dish, which is essentially stir-fry and rice with french fries. This one is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall as you won’t even see it unless you’re looking for it. Location: 2435 East North Street Suite 1110-1111, Greenville SC, 29615 (past the “Courtyard Shops” sign, to the right of the UPS Store).
